Colin Aberdeen, our new old friend hangs out with CNY Music Now: Windows.

Colin Aberdeen is a songwriter and guitarist who plays down-home blues and roots music with his own personal stamp.

His songs are drawn from life as a consummate working musician over the course of the last three decades and the songs he sings have some stories to tell about all the characters he has met along the way and life on the road, from the centers to the fringes of all the towns and cities , big and small, that he’s had the pleasure to play from New Orleans to New York, Mobile to Memphis , Denver to Daufuske Island, Syracuse to Saranac Lake and many places in between.

His playing draws heavily on early acoustic blues styles and his songs are relatable as they are derived from real life and bear a commonality of human experience that is accessible to listeners both familiar w his work and those who are first time listeners.

There are healthy doses of irony, humor, love and loss, failure and redemption. . .

The songs sound at once very familiar and like nothing else. It’s one man’s experience to which many can relate and share within, and that well may be the core source of his loyal, growing and ongoing audience over all these years.

Colin is relaxed, spontaneous, off hand and funny and the audiences continue to be receptive.

He has won many regional awards in the Syracuse area over the course all of those years firstly as solo performer, then w the raucous acoustic jugband/blues outfit, The Westcott Jugsuckers, whose music is loosely based in the classic Jugband tradition of Memphis in the 1920’s and 30’s and lastly but by no means least, w Los Blancos, Aberdeen’s primary musical vehicle for the last 25 years.

Working as solo act and w both of the aforementioned bands Aberdeen has opened for and shared bills w Little Feat, Los Lobos, Delbert McClinton, Robben Ford, Al Kooper, Terrance Simien, Derek Trucks, Gov’t Mule, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, The Radiators, Leon Russell, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bela Fleck, Carolyn Wonderland, Joe Bonamassa, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robbilard, David Bromberg, Levon Helm and The Barnburners, Jonathan Edwards, Commander Cody, Tommy Castro, Walter Trout, . . . just a whole lot of amazing acts and those calls to open for nationally touring artists, warm up the crowd and maintain the high standard of the event just keep on coming. When you hear him play, you’ll understand why. . .

There are no gimmicks or tricks, it’s not flashy or slick but the songs, singing and playing are raw, real, and honest. Both the original tunes and an eclectic blend of cool n kooky covers from a huge swath of sources from across the spectrum of roots n blues music that are lean and say just what they mean. Just songs sung and played from the heart.

Give Colin a listen!! You’ll feel like you just had a great hang with a new old friend!!
